Nvidia is building PC chips now: what it means for AI laptops in 2026

(2 months ago) · 3 min read · By Future Technology · Edited by Nath Connell

Key takeaways

  • Nvidia is entering the PC processor market for the first time, building AI agent PCs with Microsoft, Dell and HP and taking aim at the CPU market Intel and AMD have owned for decades
  • The pitch is a laptop tuned end to end for on-device AI, pairing a Nvidia CPU with Nvidia graphics so more AI runs on the machine, not the cloud
  • Nothing is on shelves yet, so there is no reason to wait; today AI PCs run on Snapdragon X or Intel Core Ultra
  • If you want an AI PC today, a Copilot+ machine like the Microsoft Surface Laptop is the safe mainstream pick

Nvidia is about to do something it has never done: build the main processor inside a normal PC. Around its latest push, the company is reported to be working with Microsoft, Dell and HP on a line of AI agent PCs, laptops designed from the silicon up to run AI locally. The target is the roughly 200 billion dollar CPU market that Intel and AMD have split between them for decades.

What Nvidia actually announced

Nvidia plans to pair one of its own CPUs with its graphics on a single laptop board, sold as an AI agent PC. Microsoft is in for Windows, Dell and HP for the hardware. Nvidia already owns the market for the chips that train AI in data centres, so this is the company trying to carry that advantage to the thing on your desk.

What an AI PC and an NPU actually are

Strip the marketing and an AI PC is a computer with one extra part: an NPU, or neural processing unit. It runs AI models quickly while sipping power. That helps battery life, and it helps privacy, because a model running on your laptop does not have to send your data to the cloud. This is the same on-device shift we covered when Arm laptops went mainstream.

Should you wait for Nvidia?

Short answer: no, not if you need a laptop now. Nvidia PC chips are not on shelves and prices are unknown. The AI PCs you can buy today run on Qualcomm Snapdragon X or Intel Core Ultra, both with capable NPUs. For the data centre side of the same fight, see our breakdown of AMD Advancing AI 2026.

The AI PCs worth buying today

Best mainstream is the Microsoft Surface Laptop, a Copilot+ PC on the Snapdragon X Elite. Check price on Amazon →.

Best big screen is the Samsung Galaxy Book4 Edge, also Copilot+ on the Snapdragon X Elite, with a 16 inch panel and 1TB of storage. Check price on Amazon →.

Both use an Arm chip, so check your key apps run natively first. If networking is next, our guide to Wi-Fi 6 vs Wi-Fi 7 covers that honestly too.
