[Hardware Weekly] Your next GPU costs as much as a car

Sent · Hardware & Gadgets Weekly

Nvidia's flagship GPU now costs more than a decent used car, Apple just loaded ten new products into one week including its first foldable, and Xiaomi picked this exact moment to go after Samsung's best phone. Hardware does not usually move this fast all at once.

The Big 3

Nvidia's RTX 5090 Now Costs More Than a Decent Used Car

Street prices for the RTX 5090 have blown past 5,000 dollars, more than double MSRP, as AI buyers absorb consumer Blackwell stock meant for gamers. Nvidia brought back Founder's Edition sales at list price through a Verified Priority Access scheme at PAX West, but it covers a tiny fraction of demand.

Why it matters: if you're buying a GPU this year, skip the flagship. An RTX 5080 gets you most of the performance without the AI-market markup.

Samsung 990 PRO 2TB NVMe SSD

Samsung's fastest consumer PCIe 4.0 drive, reading close to 7,450MB/s, and it will outlive whatever GPU you can actually afford this year.

Who it's for: anyone maxed out on storage running local AI models, big game libraries, or a home server build. Skip it if you're on an older PCIe 3.0 board that cannot use the extra bandwidth.

Price: around 130 to 150 pounds for the 2TB model, from Amazon UK.

Worth Waiting For

iPhone Ultra: Apple's first foldable, ships 18 September

Apple's first foldable lands at 2,000 dollars with a hinge Apple says leaves no visible crease, three days after this newsletter hits your inbox.

Why wait: nobody has tested that hinge in daily use yet, and a crease free claim from a first-generation foldable deserves real world scrutiny before anyone spends two grand on it.

What we know: pricing and specs are confirmed from Apple's own event. The crease free claim itself is still unverified outside Apple's demo units.
